What Is My Stuff Worth? by 2010-04-27 20:57:38

--Guest--
Due to space and money considerations, it's time to sell my beloved Atari and am trying to figure out what I might reasonably expect to get for it.

What I have is
* 1040 Ste (upgraded to 2Mb) with original box.
* 100 Mb hard drive (in a modified Megafile 30 case)
* one Joystick
* cable to connect to TV (RCA jacks, one video, one mono audio)
* several boxes of software (including GFA Basic, Lattice C, WordWriter ST, Populous II, Sim City, Civilization, etc.), magazines (tons of ST Format), and books (including several in the Abacus series and the Atari Compendium).
* Commodore colour monitor (accepts the RCA audio/video cable input)

I am in the Vancouver, Canada area, in case anyone in the area is actually interested. Any rough estimates on what I might be able to sell all of this for? Am I better off to sell things separately or as a bulk deal?

Thanks in advance.

It's really hard to give precise valuations. It depends who is looking to buy at the time you are looking to sell. Identical items could sell for widely varying prices at different times. The problem with selling old computer hardware these days is shipping charges. It sometimes costs more to ship an item than what it is worth so if you can't find someone local who can pick it up, you won't get high bids unless someone is really desperate to get whatever you have. From what I have seen so far, there isn't anything particularly rare in your lot but there are quite a few heavy items like the monitor and the stacks of books and magazines. Those will really drive up the shipping cost and scare a lot of potential buyers away from a bulk lot deal. Breaking up the lot will allow you to sell some of the more popular items sooner but you're going to get stuck holding on to the rest until the right buyer comes along, which may be never.

Eh, I doubt he'd *never* sell some of the stuff (just has to advertise around), but yeah, you're pretty much right on the money there (pardon the pun) otherwise.
